WCCAC initially started at one of our brother's home. For 6 months, a group of brothers and sisters met regularly to pray for the planting of a church in northwest Calgary. Finally, on Oct. 3, 1993, the Church began its first worship service at a rented facility in Brentwood's Captain John Palliser Elementary School.
In September 1994, God led Rev. Peter Yip from Australia to become the Church's first senior pastor. By God's grace and under Rev. Yip's leadership, WCCAC managed to purchase its present 3-acre land for just $525,000. God's timely provision was way beyond our hope and expectation.
The construction of WCCAC’s Phase I building began in September 1995. It was completed in eight months. The Church held its first thanksgiving worship and baptism service on June 9, 1996. Due to the rapid growth of the English congregation, Pastor Jim Cheung from Vancouver joined WCCAC as its first English-speaking pastor in October 1996.
Shortly after, the Church needed more facilities for its growing congregation. A special general meeting was convened in June 1997 and a proposed construction of the Church's Phase II building was approved.
WCCAC 15th Anniversary Special Presentation
From 1998 to 2002
Our God is an awesome God. WCCAC continued to experience the goodness and mercies of God. The Church had undergone various changes in pastoral staff, ministries and facilities in the five years commencing 1998.
With prayers and a simple faith before God, WCCAC started a Mandarin Ministry in 1999. The Lord led and sent. We rejoiced greatly when Pastor Paul Ho, Pastor Chee-Hian Kwek, Pastor Eric Lai and Pastor Joseph Liou joined us, and we submitted to God’s plan as Rev. Jim Cheung and Rev. Peter Yip answered their callings to other ministries.
The Church completed the Phase 2 expansion on our 5th anniversary and the parking lot expansion the following year. It was such a sweet blessing to us all. It resolved not just on-going crunching facility constraints but provided an even stronger desire for the congregations to reach out further to our communities with the new additions.
During the period, our pastors led the congregations to do what were pleasing to God through local ministries and short-term missions. It was just pure joy seeing our congregations, in particular the youths, growing strong in faith, joining and serving God through mission trips to Prince George, Panama, Medicine Hat, London UK, Cambridge UK and Saskatoon. These brothers and sisters actually put God’s teaching into practice. “Whatever we do, we do it for the Lord”.
A number of fellowships have experienced growth in members. Their usual meeting rooms could no longer house them. The Mandarin Ministry had at the same time matured into establishing their own worship service, Sunday school, and fellowship times. Thus, the demand for almost everything went up enormously. There were times when everything seemed to be in shortage -- meeting rooms, chairs, tables, paper, bulletin boards, keyboards, overhead projectors, kitchen supplies, etc. Nevertheless, one of the most crunching needs is the space available for meetings. Throughout the year there was major shuffling and relocating, then more shuffling and relocating of meeting place for fellowships and Sunday school classes. The building is again quickly approaching full capacity on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. By God’s grace, we managed to meet the current demand for space and equipment use. It was a delight to see that brothers and sisters willingly strive to accommodate one another each week. The Booking System for room reserve and equipment sign-out was put to good use. They helped alleviate some of the concerns over rooms and equipment utilization among different groups.
Our Phase 3 Development was progressing. It indeed testified God’s clear guidance for WCCAC.
God gave the vision of our Phase 3 Development to the Elders’ Board in 2003. After various discussion, revisions and three Special General Meetings, we chose our present blueprint in October 2006, which includes a multi-purpose hall with the size of a full basketball court, classrooms for Bible School and more rooms for children and seniors. Upon the completion of the Phase 3 building, the Awana Club meetings will be moved to the multi-purpose hall in order to facilitate further expansion.
In those five years, God had brought several of His own workmen to pastor WCCAC. Rev. Stephen Cheung became our Senior Pastor in February, 2004. Vicky Leung took up Children Ministry Director in September 2005. God’s grace was evidently abundant in 2007, with the addition of Rev. Albert Kwan, Pastor Kevin Ji and Pastor Derrick Chan to take care of the spiritual needs of the Cantonese and Mandarin congregations and our Chinese youth. We further added Joey Ung as the Children Ministry Assistant in August, 2008.
We are determined to invest in our spiritual next generation with a united heart and fully utilize our church building to spread the gospel, so that we are truly “An Evangelical Church with a Passion in Evangelism”.
